Coloquio Especial sobre Publicación Fraudulenta en las Ciencias Matemáticas

Estimada comunidad,

Les acercamos una invitación a participar de esta charla que se dará en el marco del Coloquio Especial sobre Publicación Fraudulenta en las Ciencias Matemáticas.

Día: lunes 17 de noviembre
Hora: 10:30 h

Charlista: Ilka Agricola (Chair of the Committee on Electronic Information and Communication of the IMU, Philipps-Universität Marburg, Germany)

Título: The challenges of predatory journals and paper mills in mathematics: A glimpse at the parallel universe of fake science.

Resumen:
In November 2023, Clarivate Plc announced that it had excluded the entire field of mathematics from the most recent edition of its influential list of highly cited papers because of massive citation manipulation, which in turn impacts the so-called Shanghai ranking of universities. While many mathematicians might not care, this exclusion is in fact only the tip of the iceberg. It points to a parallel universe of predatory and mega-journals whose main purpose is to offer publishing opportunities to anyone willing to pay the right price. I will explain how the system works, why we should all care, and what measures can be taken against it. In preparation, I invite you to reflect on the following questions: How often have you been contacted recently to attend a conference outside your field, to submit a paper or edit a special issue for an unknown journal, or to review an article within a week? What do you know about the following journals: Mathematics, Axioms (MDPI), Chaos, Solitons, Fractals (Elsevier), Advances in Difference Equations (Springer)? And about mathematicians such as Abdon Atangana, Dumitru Baleanu, or Hari M. Srivastava? This talk relates directly to my work as Chair of the Committee on Publishing of the International Mathematical Union.
